Can you drive from LA to Seattle in one day?

I live a little north of LA and desperately need to go home. Last minute airfare is expensive, and no one else can take the time off to drive with me. Yahoo maps, and mapquest say it's about 17 hours. Is this realistic? could I make it in 15? I really would rather drive straight through the day, and not have to take any more time off from work for days driving.

Update:

Please don't give me your opinion. I don't need to have lecture on speeding. I want to do thins safely. I want people who might have some real experience with this drive.

Yeah right. Not unless you drive really fast.

You gotta think of traffic and bad weather while driving through Oregon and Washington

Seventeen straight hours of driving is a LOT. The most I've ever driven in a day is about half that distance, and I LIKE driving. Besides, we have 'way too many dead-tired drivers in Seattle already, and the drive from Portland, OR to Seattle is going to be the hardest part of the journey. AND, if you're not used to driving in fog and/or rain, that's something else to consider. Factor in the traffic in the other major cities, and I think you'll be lucky to do it in 24 hours.

I think yahoo maps assumes you drive at roughly 70 mph on freeways-- you can judge how long it would likely take you based on how fast you generally drive on freeways in relation to that number. I doubt you could get there in 15 hours without speeding significantly (and FWIW speeding significantly in OR with CA plates is not a good idea--my sister has gotten a few tickets over the years.) 17 sounds more reasonable, and it'd probably be closer to 18 once you factor in stopping for gas, meals, stretching your legs, etc.

    I personally wouldn't do it.

If I drove from Seattle to Nebraska (middle of NE, no less) non-stop, you can make L.A. - Seattle.... :)

Oh... and check the mountain pass (Shasta) for weather first, if you're going in the winter! I-5 is the quickest way (don't take 101!) Additionally, if you're trying to make good time, try not to be on the freeways during rush hour - start driving early in the morning instead.

No. Break the trip up a bit for safety's sake.
