My floppy eared dog has a pillow like bump on it?

I spoke to the vet & she said it was possibly a hemotoma, but she would have to see and the dog will need to be put on anti biotics. My dog had one on its other ear last year and it went away on its own, but the tip of the ear is still 'bent'. Any other ideas what it could be and can a dog take a human anti biotics ? I have amoxicillin 500mg here..is that safe ?

Floppy-eared dogs may be more prone to ear infections than dogs whose ears are erect--less air can circulate. If infection occurs & the dog shakes his head because if pain & irritation, the shaking of his ears can cause a blood vessel to burst, creating a hematoma.

I would wait until the vet examines your dog, takes an ear swab & determines the right medication for your dog. Hematomas can sometimes need surgery and/or drains. As with your dog's other ear, they can resolve on their own, but can leave the ear wrinkled & somewhat disfigured.

Hemotomas are quite common in some breeds of floppy eared dogs. Luckily, they are fairly easy to treat.

Please don't give human medicine to your pet without first consulting your veterinarian. I know you probably are anxious to get your pet on meds (or don't want to have to fork out the extra money for the meds from the vet). However, there are differences in human and animal drugs, and dosages can be different.

So, ask your vet first. They'll let you know whether it's okay or not.

You want a vet to look at it! Hematoma's can turn into really gross big hematoma's that need drains =( That isn't something you should treat on your own.
