algebra question ,can u solve by method?

A says to B ,"when i was of your age, i was 5 times old as you were" and the sum of there present ages is 28.find there present ages?

I KNOW BY HIT AND TRIAL THE ANSWER IS OBVIOUSLY 18 AND 10 ,BUT I NEED COMPLETE SOLUTION ,thanx for the answer in advance

Update:

here question means that,

when "A was of B's age" ,that simply implies A is older than B,and A is talking about the time when he was of the age of B, suppose A's age is

100 and B is 90 then ,his statemant simply means 10 years ago.........

Update 2:

here present ages are taken under consideration

Update 3:

the 5 times.... line means that some years back A's age was 5 times of B

Update 4:

the 5 times.... statement means some years back A's age was 5 times of B's age at that time

    let the present ages be

    x for A

    y for B

    so x + y = 28.............(1)

    now when A was of B's age that is (x -y) years ago

    the ages would be

    for A x - (x - y)

    = y (obviously)

    for B y - (x - y)

    = 2y - x

    now acc. to ques

    y = 5 ( 2y - x)

    y = 10y - 5x

    5x - 9y = 0

    x = 9y/5..............................(2)

    putting values of x in (1)

    9y/5 + y = 28

    14y/5 = 28

    y = 10

    and also x = 28-10 =18

    there fore A's present age is 18 years

    and of B is 10 years

    i hope, now you got the full solution

    A=5B

    A+B=28

    A=28-B

    A=A so...

    5B=28-B

    6B=28

    B=28/6

    A= (28/6)*5=140/6

    Convert to Years and Months:

    A=140/6 = 23 Years, 4 Months

    B=28/6 = 4 Years, 8 Months

    What!??? if i understood correctly you asked what is "a" and "b"

    in a + b=28

    5b=a

    if that is right then you simply subtract b from the first equation to make it a=28-b, then you put both equations together like this --> 28-b=5b (because both equations are equal to a)

    then you add b to both sides to make it 28=6b (5b + 1b = 6b)

    then you divide both sides by 6 and get b=4.6666....

    which is 4yrs 8 months

    then you plug in 4.666... in to one of the original equations and get a=23.3333...

    Let A be x yrs and B be y yrs (present)

    x+y=28

    y=28-x

    A was of B's age (x-y) yrs ago

    y=5(x-y)

    y=5x-5y

    6y=5x

    6(28-x)=5x

    168-6x=5x

    168=11x

    x=

    Sorry im lost..i tried ver hard though..

    "When I was your age, I was 5 times old as you were"

    That makes NO sense...
