Presidential Transition question?

Ok, so some friends and I where talking about this the other night and the thought came up, Who would be in charge if something happened to Obama and Biden before they where Sworn in? for example, both are on a jet to Washington and something happens on the plane like a bad seal or something that causes all on board be lost. who then would be in control? I thought it would fall to the speaker of the house, but none of us could really nail it down. Some insight would be nice. Thanks.

If both Obama and Biden were to die or become disabled between now and the innauguration on Jan. 20th, 2009 then the Speaker of the House would be sworn in as President on l/20/09. In this case it would be Nancy Pelosi. If something happened to the Speaker of the House the job would then go to President Pro Tempore of the Senate. After the latter, Secretaries of the President's Cabinet fill out the balance of list of succession.

Sooo you were correct...Speaker of the House.

It would be the Speaker of the House since even though they have not been inaugurated, Obama and Biden "count" as President and VP. However, if something bad were to happen to Biden, Obama would have to select another VP. If something happened to Obama, Biden would become President-Elect and he would select his own VP.
