Wondering the compatibility of a Cockatiel and a Parakeet.?
Thinking of getting a little parakeet for company for my Cockatiel, and curious if anyone has any first hand knowledge if this is a good idea. I realize that introducing any new animal, to any other animal has its risk and will take a time of adjustment. Real question I guess is....
Will this be a wize risk or not?

I wouldn't mixing species of birds is never a good idea. budgies have been known to bully passive tiels it's not worth the risk, best to keep them seperated. Why do you feel your cockatiel needs a friend, cockatiels do fine as only birds as long as they are getting alot of time and attention from you.
If you still choose to get a budgie, keep in mind you will need to quarantine the budgie in a completely seperate room in your home away from you cockatiel for at least 35-45 days just in case the new budgie is carrying and illness or disease that could be passed to your cockatiel, a well bird exam by an avian vet should also be done on the budgie during quarantine to make sure the budgie is healthy.
Since you would have to have a seperate cage for qurantine might as well keep the budgie in it's own cage and after quarantine if the vet deems the bird healthy you can place the cages side by side so they can chatter back and forth to each other...any intereaction should be closely monitored as you cannot gurantee safety of either bird.

It would depend on if the cockatiel has had prior experience with a parakeet. Cockatiels do quite well as only bird pets. They bond with their humans and as long as the human spends time with the cockatiel, no other companion is really necessary. Parakeets can be rather rambunctious and this can spook the calmer cockatiel. If you want to get a companion for your cockatiel, get another cockatiel. Two female cockatiels or two male cockatiels can get along without worrying about them wanting to raise a family and ignore the human. If the cockatiel is very outgoing and won't be intimidated by a parakeet, then you can get a parakeet, but make sure they each have their own cage.

Cockatiels really dont need any company, they form an strong attatchment to 1 person, then crave their attention for the rest of the time. If you feel it might be lonly then buy a mirror, they think it is another bird and cannot tell the difference.
If you are adament on getting another bird, apparently other birds can pick on cockatiels and peck at their feet, leading to parts of their claws being pecked off and loss of balance. :(

I have first hand knowledge. My cockatiel(percy) loves my budgie! They are just so gentle with the parakeets. Percy wants to follow my budgie around everywhere. So its fine to socialise the two.

do not place the two together It is not worth the risk of having a dead bird.
Tiels need to be with tiels budgies with budgies OR have both but in their own cages.
Please read up on owning birds
