I have a rectangle shaped serving tray with what looks like rust on it how do I clean this?

I read that toothpaste can damage silver. The tray is shiny and looks like silver so I am guessing it is silver. The rust is brownish instead of black that is why I think it is rust. It was caused by my foolishly leave a moist food of some kind on it.

1st, you need to determine what kind of metal your tray is.

Call a jeweler, they can tell you ways to determine, most silver will have "92.5" stamped somewhere on it, if it is followed by a "P" then it is plated, which most diningware is. However, it may be neither.

There is an excellent book in most libraries entitled, "How to Clean Practically Anything." Once you determine what kind of metal you are working with, if you cannot find reliable tips online, like at "Good Housekeeping," or some similar site, try that book.

It may be the case that your plate needs to be discarded, however.

Anytime finish has left metal, and it begins to decompose (rust, separate, etc.), it is usually not safe, in most instances, to continue using it at all.

Your most reliable advice is prbably going to come from calling a jeweler, though, unless you know the tray's manufacturer, then you could call them.

    Good luck.

Sounds like a wonderful time Lefty. I think your tuxedo idea shows how much you really do care. I would be slightly afraid for his safety if we were to have small, chocolate cakes. I remember back a time when I had almost confused him with a Little Debbie snack cake. Only when I had started to bite down, did I realize that this was either a very stale snack cake, or our dear dark little friend. Might I suggest white frosting?
