Why do poor children in old movies always get fruit as a Christmas gift?
How would you react?

Wasn't just poor children - most all children got fruit in their stockings - it was tradition...but during the depression it was a REAL treat as fruit was a luxury and not something anyone had unless it was a special occasion. Like Christmas. My mother said the smell of oranges always reminded her of Christmas because she always got an orange in her stocking (and she was very happy to have it)
Source(s): We were far from poor growing up but my parents always included fruit in our stockings too - we liked it - but of course we got toys under the tree too. Children are far too spoiled though these days - the true meaning of Christmas has fallen away to commerialisim and how many toys you get. Very sad. - Elle ZLv 61 decade ago
Especially in the winter (which in case anyone is keeping track........Christmas falls in the winter) fruit was hard to come by and was desperately needed for it's vitamins since vitamins were scarce.
The children enjoyed receiving fruit. It was the equivalent of candy today.
