    First a link:

    http://www.amsterdam.info/

This site has all info you will need as a tourist in Amsterdam, with internal and external links.

If you can not find a certain subject, its search function will often bring up a page you had not even found.

Good things to do in Amsterdam are many, but with so many tourist coming most things will have a few of them around.

I like to go to a museum, there are at least 40 in town, so there should be one for you too.

Relatively new are the museum of bags and purses.

Fun, for me at least, are the houses decorated as they used to be in the past, you will find several in the museum listings in above site.

Walking in town can be fun too, specially in nice weather.

Just roam the canals, enter some of the side streets and when you get cold or tired, go into one of the many cafes, nearly each other street corner seems to have one, and get a hot chocolate, with a dash of something strong if you are 18+ and feel like it.

Shopping is located all over town, you can see which parts of town in above link, and can be as expensive as you want.

Many markets in town, from the well known flower market on Singel to the once a week art market on Spui.

Eating out is a must, very 'Dutch' is going to an Indonesian/Chinese restaurant and have 'rijst tafel', a selction of dishes, often served on your table. Available from 2 people, but sometimes they have a buffet you can join in.

An other traditional is pancakes, there are many pancake restaurants all over town, often with a very good selection.

Many nice restaurants can be found on Zeedijk, and around the Leidseplein and Leidse straat area, there mostly in the side streets.

How much money you will need depends on what you like and where you stay, but if you stay in a hostel, do mostly self catering and don't spend much on drinking and other expensive entertainments, €100 per day will do.

If you stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, or spend a lot of money in partying, double that amount.

And add the amount you can expect to spend on shopping.

And by the way, if you are in Amsterdam for a week, you have time enough to do a day tour, or even a few, out of town. There are many tour companies, but you can also take a train or bus and do your own thing.

If you read in the older questions you will find this question asked often and you can read a lot of answers by different people.

If you want to see some of the sights before going, I like this weblog:

The last couple of months the entries are all photos taken in the Netherlands, before that mainly in Malaysia.

There are so many great museums there that it can be hard to pick one. On thing that I recommend is renting a bicycle and touring around the city at random. It's easy to get around that way (special bike lanes, and bike traffic lights) and can be a fun way to see weird sights. I've enjoyed canal boats tours as well.

After writing this, I realize that these aren't very novel though...
