Should I get Fallout 3 or Fable II?

So I want to get one of these RPG's for Christmas. I have never owned a legit RPG before (unless you count Pokemon) and I am looking to expand my videogame library from Call of Duty, GTA, and Rock Band. I borrowed Oblivion from my friend and gave it back to him the next day, I hated it. So at first I thought Fable was out of the question because I disliked Oblivion. But then my other friend, who hated Oblivion also, LOVES Fable. Also, I thought I would get Fallout, because I have always liked guns more than magic. But now I've heard a lot of bad things about Fallout about how the combat is too easy and always the same, and there aren't a lot of creatures to fight against. And I want a game that has a lasting appeal and that once I get it, I will want to do it again and again and again. Which game do you think I should get?

Update:

O yeah, forgot to add, a few of my friends have Fable II, and I heard it has Co-op, so that would be fun playing it with them, but Fallout doesnt have Co-op, so thats another plus to Fable, but is the Co-op good?

Update 2:

Haha, sorry, one more thing, I heard the VATS system makes it too easy in Fallout in combat. I want something that gives me a challenge, does Fable offer that challenge?

Update 3:

Haha, sorry, one more thing, I heard the VATS system makes it too easy in Fallout in combat. I want something that gives me a challenge, does Fable offer that challenge?

Update 4:

And another, which game has the biggest consequence factor, I understand you can both be a hero and an antihero in Fable and there are many different ways to finish the game (adding to its replay value), does fallout have this too? So far from what Ive seen, it might come down to this....

From what I hear of Fable II it is suppose to be really good, much larger than the first, if you've played it. I found the first to be very enjoyable, something to spend many hours on, but I didn't find it to have very much replay value ( the first Fable) as once I did a quest, I didn't find much need to replay and have to do the quests again.

As for Fallout 3, I've played it for the past 2 weeks and spent the entire time focusing on exploration instead of the main quest line. The day I returned it, about 2 days ago, I checked online for a flash map of the Fallout 3 game play area and found that I may have had half of the locations uncovered and not even all of those areas were fully explored.

I do have to say that I can only think of about four different types of monsters, it does range to about 25 or so different creatures for you to kill, from different ants that breathe fire, to Super Mutants that carry mini-guns. And while that doesn't seem like many different creatures, the way you find yourself stumbling upon them or creeping around to avoid them can provide long lasting entertainment.

There's a dozen or more side-quests that can be just as long as the main quest, and a dozen more after that that aren't quite as long, but add spice to the game.

Several different species of creatures for you to positively interact with or completely destroy if you like.

AND!! When you get tired of the quests or don't like the way a certain town member acts, you can always get one of the special gore perks that are in the game, and just run around enjoying the special effects the V.A.T.S system offers.

Overall I really enjoyed Fallout 3 and it is the one I recommend. If you have any questions about it that you'd like to ask, feel free to send me a message. I didn't want to reveal too much about the game on here to spoil anything for anyone.

    Edit-

After reading a couple of the other recent posts I realized I forgot a few things =X

In concern with JJRimmer and the shortness of Fable II main quest, I'm sure it can be compared to the shortness of Fallout 3's main quest, but coupled with the vast area to explore and side quests, it's well worth the gameplay.

As for the V.A.T.S. system making it too easy, that's not entirely true. It depends on how you create your character, with what weapon choices, perk choices, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skill choices, distance, a ton of factors. A lot of the killing can be done easily, yes, but a lot of it also may not be done easily.

For instance, I found myself running out of AP for V.A.T.S against Yao **** and *****claws, and because of my personal preference not to get addicted to some of the drugs (yes you can get addicted and the withdrawl symtoms can highly impair different skills or visuals which I feel adds great theme to the game) and I found myself having to fight them face to face without the slowdown, making it much more difficult.

And while I haven't played Fable II yet, I felt that the combat of the first Fable was easy enough, and would gladly compare the difficulty of both as being probably equal.

And if that doesn't top it off, in Fallout 3 you have the option at any time to change the difficulty level of your game from: very easy, easy, normal, hard, and very hard.

I played on normal for most of the game while I had it, and for a good portion on hard, with a noticeable difference. I didn't try it on very hard, but I plan to once I get a hold of another copy of the game.

    Edit2-

I actually didn't complete the main quest and so I have no idea how many different ways it might end. There is a karma level basis though, and depending on what actions you take, saving people, stealing, murdering, etc, will depend on your karma, and effect your interactions with other people.

Not only does karma do this, but also your skill level in the main attributes allow different interactions in conversations and how people react to you. There are also a few perks that allow more in depth conversations with people.

So, while I don't know how many different endings there are, I know there is the good/bad karma level that causes different interactions.

Both games are in a league of there own.

Fallout 3 has very mature themes and the world is as they advertised. Limitless. The story line is interesting and the post nuclear world is Amazing. There are heaps of quests but the combat is slightly easy with the V.A.T.S system.

Fable 2 is a fantastic game. Everything about it is comical and entertaining. Although the setting is childish it more than makes up for it with depth. You can truly live a different life in a different world where every decision has a consequence. Be an evil lord or the Savior of the land. The only problem with this game is that the main story is short, however there are heaps of side quests and jobs to keep you busy for hundreds of hours.

In the end the decision is up to you, Fallout 3 is a sceptical view of a Society in ruin where you are on a path to helping bring hope to the world. Fable 2 sets you in a fantasy universe of magic and Mayhem where every decision effects the world around you.

If your looking for a pure rpg, then Fallout 3. If your looking for a quirky setting with heaps of value then Fable 2 is the one for you.

Hope this helps. If you do end up getting Fable 2, my gamertag is JJRimmer if you want i can help you through the game in co-op mode.

Edit: The co-op is good, you act as a mercernary for the host player.

between those two, i would personally prefer Fallout, just cause i've heard Fable is very very short, and have friends who have beat it with a day or two. Plus Fallout just looks amazing.

But, if you want to expand your horizons, you definetly need to look at those Final Fantasy games out there.

Final Fantasy 7,8,9, and 10, are must haves if you like rpgs.

Cant go wrong with Chrono trigger either.

There older, but still a ton of fun. Lot cheaper too, cept for vii.

fallout 3 is made by bethesda.. who made oblivion. enough said.

fable 2 is nice, but if you really want an rpg like your pokemon... get something else.

the last remnant, though a little frame-skippy, is very nice.

lost odyssey is awesome, and so is blue dragon.
