I am attempting my first Thanksgiving dinner!?

Anyone want to share any tips, to-do's or don't-do's? Any insight would be great! My menu isn't all that exciting and there's only two of us...a small turkey, homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn and/or peas and some homemade pumpkin roll.

first off there is foodnetwork.com which i really like.......but all in all take a deep breath and relax you will do just fine .first off and most importantly : 1.remember to take out your turkey a few days a head of time to allow to un thaw it....

2.being your first thanksgiving butterball.com i believe has a hot line should you have any questions about preparing your turkey.

3.were you planning a side dish of a bowl a coleslaw pick up the bag of already mix is the simplest way to go and a day before thanks giving just open up the bag and put the bag of mix in a bowl, and mix in a bottle of coleslaw dressing and chill in refridgerator over night....

4.may a suggest a package of dinner rolls such as potato rolls to add to the meal also

5 or you could also make a simple box of cranberry bread if that is what you prefer!

6.may i suggest two jars of pickled beets bought from your local grocery store to add to your meal.... there really good and have been a thanksgiving tradition in my family ever since i was a little child......

7.dont forget the cool whip for any pies you may decide to make..

8.dont forget either jars of gravy or canned gravy or the packets of gravy for those mashed potatoes

9foil wrap so the turkey will not burn if you are using a conventional oven to prepare the turkey..

10.depending on your preferance will you be buying any canned cranberry sauce to add to your holiay meal.

11.have you remembered to pick up a thanksgivng table cloth and matching napkins ...

12.anything that can be done a day a head of time do it...such as washing your dinner plates, silver ware, and i do not see why not setting the table a head of time if possible..and getting some side dishes prepared of head of time always help a lot !!!

13.does he like sliced dilled pickles to add to the meal perghaps.. as my son does.pick up a few jars of em.

**********you know perhaps you could take a trip to your local grocery store in your area and some time this week before the big day arrives carefull walk down any food isle and you will see there is so many modern conviences of all that is, boxed ,or packages of stuff all ready done for us or canned items, or quick and simple mixes of breads etc...and prebaked pies,etc... it certainly is a quick and simple world we live in...so take a deep breath and relax you owe it to your self...you will do fine...

Source(s): just remember this though some may be more professional in the kitchen it all boils down to we all take advantage of modern conviences from the local grocery store almost every day as at some point we are all pressed on time.. to keeping it simple!!!

A tip I got once and have used since is to put some fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, etc.) inside the cavity of the turkey, instead of stuffing it with the bread stuffing. The herbs penetrate the meat better from inside the cavity and it is so delicious!! Not to mention the smell that lingers in your home. Then I just bake the stuffing on the side for about 30 minutes or so and serve it as a side, instead of actually stuffing the bird with it. Just a suggestion :) I hope all goes well and congrats on your first Thanksgiving!

Make a game plan -- write out when things need to be started, when what is in the oven, etc. It will run more smoothly.

Make sure you're being safe -- Thanksgiving has a way of sending many people to the hospital because they didn't practice safety (proper disinfecting, proper cooking, etc)

Get a bottle of wine, or better yet some of those "single serve" bottles -- have a new flavor for cooking/appetizers, dinner, and dessert. It makes a great accompaniment to a cozy little Thanksgiving.

Sweet Potatoes, Apple Cider, your favorite kind of pie. Since there are only two of you you might want to consider inviting a friend over who maybe celebrating thanksgiving by his/herself. That would be an appropriate way to spend the holiday,

Sounds lovely! My tip would be to try and make ahead some of the items on the menu, so you can actually sit down and relax on your special day.

Your menu sounds good. I remember cooking my first thanksgiving dinner about four years ago it was for me and my boyfriend as well...Just follow the directions and make sure you experiment with spices because thats whats going to make it taste good...thats the key....but my first thanksgiving was a mess everything was a little overcooked and i used to burn everything! Good luck
