A debit card takes money directly out of your bank account. It's like paying cash.
A credit card takes out a loan from the credit card company that you must pay back. If you don't pay it all off by the end of the month, you pay interest.
A debit card can be processed as a credit card. This is the way the merchant's machine handles the transaction. In reality, it still looks like a debit transaction when it hits your account.

Your debit or ATM card in most cases can be used as a credit card if it has the Visa or Master card logo, but has no affect on your credit score if that is what you where asking

There are two different types of debit cards. One has a credit card logo on it such as MasterCard or Visa. The other does not. They both work the same way. They use funds you have already deposited in either a checking or savings account. If you are using a prepaid debit card you fund the card in advance at either a store or online but it works the same way.

The money spent reflects the money in your bank account. However, banks can arbitrarily cover what is not in your account costing you an overdraft fee. Alot of banks do this, so they say, you wont have to forgo those things you want. But realistically, they like the fee's: 35 dollars for overdrawing. So, its actually both a credit and a debit card.
