Why does firefox every now and then discard my login details for various sites?

I've started using firefox as my main browser just recently. I select the option to remember my username and security questions on most sites like my bank, credit card and even torrent sites. However every now and then firefox will just discard all this info so the next time I visit, I need to reenter my login, security question, etc. It's kind of getting annoying. I never faced such problems with IE. I don't quite know which setting to look for or is this a "feature" of firefox to discard all logins every now and then and give you no option of having any contol over it?

Update:

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the settings appear just the way you recommend they should appear i.e.

"Always clear my private data when I close firefox" is unchecked

The "Saved Passwords" box is unchecked.

What's weird is that I don't recall having this problem with firefox on my work laptop. Firefox on both machines are set to these default options.

You may want to check your privacy settings.

To navigate to this area, Click on "Tools" from the menu (or type Alt-T if the menu isn't visible),

    then select "Options",

then select "Privacy" tab at the top of the Options window.

Towards the bottom of the privacy tab section, you will see a boxed area called "Private Data" and in this area you will see check-box options for "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" and "Ask me before clearing Private Data"

At the end of "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" there will be a "Settings" button.

    Click on the "Settings" button.

You will see optional check-box settings for different types of data that Firefox will automatically clear when it closes.

In your case, I would at least make sure that the "Saved Passwords" box is unchecked.

Or otherwise you could make sure the "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" is unchecked right from the "Privacy" menu to being with, that way no privacy data is erased at all.

Hope that helps! Good luck! :)
