How many test cricketers have made their debut as a bowler, but retired from tests as a batsman?

(or maybe allrounder)

Wilfred Rhodes batted in every position, slowing promoting himself from no. 11 to opening with Jack Hobbs.

Scott Styris played most of his early games for New Zealand primarily a bowler and batted number 8 or no 9, but is now better known for his batting at no 4 or 5.

Shoaib Malik began his ODI career as a no.11 batsman and off-spinner, but now regularly opens innings in both Tests and ODIs.

Daniel Vettori was long considered to have untapped batting ability, but he worked on his batting and now has two Test centuries to his name.

Abdur Razzak was the other notable case; in fact, Pakistan seem to have quite a tradition of turning their bowlers into all-rounders.

I think the best example that comes to my mind is Ravi Shastri. He was a left arm spinner batting at 10 or 11 when he got into the national side. He went up the order reaching the opening slot and staying there for a while. Towards the end, I think he had stopped bowling due to injuries and he was still in the side as a batsman. I think this is a genuine example of what you have been asking.

The Waugh brothers used to bowl.

Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly used to be good all-rounders, but they've stopped bowling.

Arjuna Ranatunga used to bowl a bit of medium-pace at the start of his career.

Imran Khan was one of the world's best bowlers but he didn't bowl a lot in the last few games he played.

Martin Crowe was a good all-rounder for New Zealand, but he stopped bowling.

Nathan Astle was a good all-rounder, but he didn't bowl much at the end of his career.

Freddy Flintoff, Chris Cairns, Chris Harris, Abdul Razzak, Jacques Kallis and Heath Streak started their careers as all-rounders and never stopped being all-rounders.

mike atherton is one that springs to mind, he started out as a all rounder as he bowled a bit of leg spin and was considered a good spinner (by pommy standards)
