It is a cool gift. I was playing when I received the achievement for "Logged during WoW 4th Anniversary".
What is nice about it is that it does not take up any bag space and you can send it to other toons on your server so they can get credit for the pet as well. It's another pet for your pet achievement as well!
I think it is cool that Blizzard gave us SOMETHING. I'm sure other people would have preferred gold or a weapon or armor of some kind, but I think a pet is probably the most fair thing they could have given us as players.
