Do performance chips work?

I just wonder I have never had a performance chip in any vehicle before and have heard good and bad about them. I will be getting a Crown Vic next month and there is a chip available that says it adds 100HP but I find it hard to believe so I wonder if I shouldn't just swap out the cam for a high lift one. The chip is over $500 so I don't want to get it for nothing.

Update:

Yeah, I'm actually a mechanic so you don't have to tell me what is hard or not hard or how to do it. I just want to know from people who have experience with chips, especially on gas engines and especially on the 4.6 if they are effective.

Performance chips generally do work, I would hesitate believing a 100hp increase with just that modification though.

On a naturally aspirated car, I would expect the increase to be somewhat closer to 25hp. On turbocharged cars with electronically controlled boost, it can be somewhat higher than that.

I highly doubt you would get 100 hp out of any single after market component. Most chips will give you between a 5 to 10 percent increase in horsepower. Even if you would get that much more power your radiator probably couldn't handle that much increase. As a mechanic you would know the radiator most be able to handle the engines capability.

It is a very big job to swap out cam shafts on a 4.6 Crown victorian. That chain is a MOTHER. The valve spings are light weight also, don't think they will last in a higher lift.

    The chip would be best.
