Do some Christians really not see the similarity here?

A girl asked a question about believing in the Greek gods instead of the Christian one: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuDx7...

and one of the answers was: "A long time ago the greeks just made up this mythology to give their people something to believe in, to make the moral of people better." Other answers basically said the same thing.

Do some Christians really not see the similarity between this and their religion? People back then really believed they were right too, what makes Christianity so different?

Update:

Rebecca: I've read the bible and studied Mythology. I was brought up Methodist and went to church and Sunday School every week. Trust me, I know plenty about the bible.

They really don't see the difference. And it's amazing. They feel that, because theirs is the mythology that they've chosen to believe, then it must be real. Sheer conceit, not to mention ignorance.

The resurrected messiah story was around thousands of years before Jesus supposedly came along. The whole thing, too: virgin birth, miracles, healing, raising the dead, martyrdom, resurrection, ascension, all of it. Christianity is just another form of an old, old fairy tale, and not a very well told one, I'm afraid.

Sorry folks. These are the facts. Christianity was plagiarized from even more ancient mythologies. There is no record of this supposedly heralded birth (or the supernova that foretold it), no record of his miracles (which, you would think, would have attracted a lot of attention), no record of the three hours of darkness that supposedly covered the land, no record of the earthquake, no record of the dead that supposedly got up out of their graves.

There were hundreds of scribes, travelers, historians---Roman and otherwise---who were in that area when these events supposedly happened. NONE of them have ever recorded a single notation of events that, had they actually happened, would have stunned the world. The only record are the gospels, which disagree with each other on the details, which were not written by people who actually witnessed the described events, and which have been abridged, amended, altered, edited, and translated repeatedly throughout history.

And this is what they call the "gospel truth."

A study of the Quaballah is pretty inclusive of all religions and the "Kings" "Saviour" that are in any culture. Quaballah is not a religion but an explaination of how the universe works and by explaining how the universe works it also explains that there is a God and Goddess and that there is always one that is sacrificed to save the people to bring them redemption. Jesus used a lot of quaballistic examples in his parables. Also read Joseph Campbell. It is amazing what you will discover when you study other mythos.

I answered that question. I'm a Christian, and feel that people must be free to select their own religious (or non-religious) path. I said nothing at all to discourage her; in fact, I mentioned that I've had similar thoughts. Christian mythology and Greco-Roman mythology (and particularly Egyptian mythology) do share some similarities.

Humans have always had an idea that there is a creator. This is common among indians that did not have contact with anyone, as well as all ancient peoples.

They just did not have the fullness of understanding that we do, we have also been given Jesus as our new Covenant between God and man. The people of ancient times did not have that luxury.

The thought that this proves Religion as false is backwards to me. To me it proves that humans have always known that we had a creator, and that we are lucky to live in a time that is more enlightened about it than they did.

    Peace be with you.

Personally, I find monotheism a lot more believable than polytheism, with its never ending domestic squabbles between the different gods. That is too obviously humanity writ large.

Even after rejecting biblical literalism the similarity between Pandora's box and the story of "Eve" and the fruit caught me by surprise: Cultural filters are strong.

"A long time ago the greeks just made up this mythology to give their people something to believe in, to make the moral of people better."

No, they will not see the similarity because faith shuts the eye to reason.

That describes Christianity in the most accurate way possible. Substitute the 'greeks' for the Roman Catholic church.

I can't understand how they CANNOT see the similarities. Very few will try to differentiate why they are different and why theirs in the correct one.

It's funny to read that other religions are made up to change morals. Christianity was there to change the pre-existing laws (morals) - may it be devine or not. And even after Jesus's death, other authors of the Bible continue to change the religion. One example is St. Peter (please forgive me if I named the wrong author) nullified/removed the law to withstand eating unclean food. Then the Bible was edited, books were added or removed, and translated to fit what others believed was correct. Christianity has changed so many times since the death of Christ that to blindly follow it is ascinine.

I see no similarities in a greek mythological hoohaa thing that men created and what God the Creator did for all of us, and most repay Him with this disbelief....its a shame...

    Also, from the same link:

you'll see that the "gods" behave just like us. They're jealous and petty and vengeful.

The true God of the bible is nothing like them. I hope you find the right path.

    lol
