Physics: force and acceleration?

A force of 5N gives a mass M1 an acceleration of 8m/s^2 and a mass M2 an acceleration of 24 m/s^2. What acceleration would it give the two when they are fastened together?

Can someone show me step by step how to do this problem?

    Hi!

    I hope this will help you:

    First there is the formula F=m.a (F is force, it's a vector quantity - that means it has a direction, and is therefore written with a small arrow above the letter, and so is a - the acceleration).

    -substitute in the formula:

    F=5N

    F=m1.a1

    5N=m1.8m/s^2

    m=F/a

    m1= 5/8 =0,625kg

    F=5N

    F=m2.a2

    5N=m2.24m/s^2

    m=F/a

    m2=5/24

    m~0,208kg

    -calculate the mass of the two bodies fastened together:

    m=m1 + m2

    m=0,625 + 0,208

    m~0,833kg

    -calculate the acceleration:

    a=F/m

    a=5N/0,833kg

    a~6m/s^2
