use middle name instead of first?

What do you guys think. I have an unofficial middle name that I never really used but now I want to change my first name to my middle name. SO should I just legally add my middle name and just casually use it as my first or drop my first name all together and legally change my first name to my middle name? The reason i am considering legally keeping my first and just legally adding my middle name is because my first name will be printed on my college diploma and all of my old friends and family call me by my legal first name.

any thoughts?

I think you should keep the name that is on your diploma until you have established yourself in whatever profession you graduated in. Otherwise new clients would wonder why the diploma on the wall says "John Smith", while you call yourself "Joe Smith" or "JohnJoe Smith".

It will be hard for them to do at first but it will catch on. My FIL switched his name to his middle name when my husband was small. Apparently some of his old friends still don't call him by his middle name but that isn't a huge deal either. Once the new people meet start calling you Bailey it will stick. Are you sure that you want to switch? This can't be something that you just do impulsively and then go back a few months from now. Kaitlin is a popular name but so is Bailey. Bailey is very trendy. Now that you are getting older, Kaitlin is better suited for you - it will age nicely. Kait is a beautiful name that people will take seriously. Think long and hard before you make the choice! SD

Keep your first name, and add your middle. Were you not already given a middle name though? Or did you just have two names? But I wouldn't change what your parents gave you. It's alot of time, money, and for what? Just so they won't say something you obviously don't like at graduation? You can be called whatever you like, but no matter what, your name is always going to be just that, your name....

You can have people refer you by the middle name, but legal forms and stuff you would still have to put in your first name as first name.

You can use it as a nickname unless you really want to go through all the trouble and money to legally change your name.

a lot of people go by their middle name, so i think adding your middle name only would be fine. before you go to the trouble, can you find out if you can have something else printed on your diploma/degree? it might be easier just to change it at your school.

Why do you want to change your name in the first place? your parents named you for a reason, so unless they were trippin on acid or something I would keep your name.

It still costs money if you are going to legally do anything to your name..even changing the spelling.
