Yes, and the people at the patent office will help you. It doesn't have to cost you a lot of money and it doesn't have to take forever. make sure you have a working model of the product and a time-line of the work you did and when you did it (in case there is a conflicting claim)..

Yes, but it is a long, expensive process. You really need to see a patent attorney.
