Isn't it ironic that many wars were fought on the basis of religion?

when many religions (such as islam, christianity, and judaism) condemn killing.

Update:

Jack: here are some quotes from the Koran:

Whoever kills another one without justifiable cause, surely he is killing all of humanity. And whoever saves the life of another one, surely he saves the lives of all of humanity. [Sura Al Ma'aidah: Ayah 32]

If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things. [8:61]

There are none that explicitly condemn killing; however, if everyone who fought wars for religion fought now only for peace, there would be no justifiable cause for killing. Also, the Crusades were fought on the basis of fighting for Christianity, and in the Christian religion, one of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not kill." So, you could argue that the Crusaders were fighting for the devil and not for God. Right?

If you will remember, up until Johannes Gutenburg invented the Movable Type Print in the 17th century, the only people who ever were allowed to read religious texts were the clergy and the nobility. So, no matter, what the text actually says, the people, ignorant of what the "good books" actually say, would believe what their leaders told them. If what they are told is that killing these people is necessary as they are an affront to God and if you object to doing your duty, you are committing a sin, then those people are going to follow their leaders anywhere.

many religions like 'islam' condemn killing? islam??? u sure?

please make sure first...cuz if u r right, religious leaders of islam don't obey islam at all...!..we read everyday on newspapers about 'fatwah's,

that tell us of something totally different!

whatever, why would it be ironic that many wars were fought on the basis of religion? accept it ot not, religion has a strange power of making even the educated ones simply blind...and once people r blind, what else do u expect from them?..kisses instead of war?

Yes, but it isn't surprising. When something so profound is such an enormous part of the lives, and perceived afterlives of so many. Many of whom are uneducated. Quite a few are bound to misinterpret it and think that love thy neighbor, means love thy peers. And kill anybody who disputes their strongest belief. It's amazing to me that there haven't been more.

Another reason, it's an easy reason to give as a pretense.

It is in fact very ironic. Each one trying to "save" the other.
