Are there reasons not to wear ancient jewelry?

"Bronze ring with verdigris patination evident."

Is it more fragile than it looks? Is patina bad for the skin?

Can I wear it?

Plenty of ancient jewellery is absolutely fine to wear. I have a solid silver Greek bracelet that I wear all the time (2200 years old), it's lovely and never goes to any harm. I also have a bronze viking ring and a silver Celtic ring, both of which I wear constantly. Silver that is tarnished will clear up when you wear it, as the warmth of the skin gets rid of the tarnish. I am not sure about bronze items, the bronze ring I have has no patination, and i am not sure whether it wears off if you wear an intem that is patinated. But again, the dealer should be able to tell you that.

It really depends on the state the jewellery is in. Usually when an item of ancient jewellery is for sale, it will say whether it is wearable or not, if you are not sure then you should check with the dealer.

If the jewelry has potential historical value, you shouldn't wear it for the potential of damage to the artifact. You should try getting it appraised to make sure that it isn't of significant value.

Verdigris patination is the bronze form of rusting, coming from the oxidation of copper. It's not bad for you, but it might turn your finger blue.
