1. He tries to kill Harry like a million times....Harry is one of the only people left who's keeping Voldemort from being in complete control.
2. He creates Horcruxes. He doesnt just want to control other people's lives, but he wants to have control over his own life as well. He wants insure that he can't die. Having immortality gives him even more control because he's untouchable.
3. Going after the Elder Wand...the most powerful wand that is "unbeatable." Again it gives him ultimate control and he doesnt care who he has to kill (snape, Grindelwald, the famous wand maker, etc.) or what he has to do (desecrating Dumbledore's tomb) to get it.
4. Taking control over the Ministry and attempting to get control over the Muggle ministry.
5. Putting a taboo on his name so that the people who are not scared enough to say it can be found and eliminated. he doesn't want anyone out there who's not willing to be broken.
6. Going after the Sorcerer's stone...again immortality.
7. Taking over Hogwarts...so that he can start controlling people while their still young.
8. Getting his Nazi-like Deatheaters to do all of his dirty work.
He tried so many different things...but thankfully he failed in the end.
