Other than the Temptations, can you name successful r&b groups have changed lead singers?
I was reading the Yahoo music article about rock bands whose new lead singer destroyed the band. And I noticed that doesn't happen nearly as much in r&b groups.
Immature changed a member, but NOT the lead singer... Marques Houston was ALWAYS the lead singer.
Okay.. I didn't know that about the Platters. Of course both the Temps & Platters were before my time.... I'm thinking the closest thing in MY generation.... 702 brought a new girl in after Kameelah left the group. And she was the lead singer, but that was short lived.
En Vogue never really replaced Dawn Robinson, but again she wasn't really THE LEAD VOICE... but she did lead sometimes.
New Edition replacing Bobby Brown with Johnny Gill... but neither were the VOICE of N.E. Ralph Tresvant was.
KEVIN... BLACKSTREET is a GREAT ANSWER...
I think Dave Hollister WAS the voice of Blackstreet... even though he technically wasn't the 'lead'... BUT, they DID have to replace him a couple of times...

New Edition was the first group that popped into my head but they really didn't have a lead singer. Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant kind of shared the lead vocals.
BlackSTREET was another group that popped into my head. Dave Hollister and Levi Little were replaced by Mark Middleton and Eric Williams in 1996 just before recording Another Level. But if I'm not mistaken it was Chauncey who was mostly on lead vocals.

it's actually not too many band that i know of that have changed lead singers but i do know of these two:
earth, wind, & fire: there were a few band members that would lead sing on some of the songs that maurice white lead on, but now he is back and beleive me you can tell the difference. muarice made ewf, including phillip bailey.
the commodores: they were also sucessful group in the 70/80s and they had to change one of their lead singers (lionel richie) after he went solo to pursue his own music career.
Source(s): ....and your right not too many r&b groups have had a lead singer to actually destroy the entire band. you have heard of groups faded out or splitting up b/c someone wanted to pursue a solo career or sometimes you have heard drugs/alcohol corrupting a member(s), etc.
