How do I hook up my Linksys wireless router?
A friend gave me a wireless router & I can't seem to get a connection. There is a spot for my cable modem to be hooked to the router & I can't remember if I am supposed to go from the modem to the "internet" spot on the router or the "ethernet" spot. I have been switching back & forth & can't get it to work. Also, how do I make the router "mine" so my computer recognizes that it belongs to me & I can put a password on it. Can this really be that hard....I am honestly about to burst into tears!

Okay, first get the router talking to your computer. Then get the router talking to the Internet.
You may need to reset the router to factory settings if it has a password configured that you don't know. You can find out how to do this from the manufacturer's web page. It should then create a wireless network with a default name like 'Linksys'. You should be able to join that wireless network.
You can then login to the router and configure it. Open up a browser and type either 'http://192.168.0.1/' or 'http://192.168.0.254'./ Those are the most common. You can use 'ipconfig' to tell what address to use, it will be the address of your default gateway.
Once you get to the router's configuration, assign a password to the router and to the wireless connection. When you apply those changes, you will lose contact with the router. You'll need to join the network again, supplying the password.
Then connect the modem to the 'Internet' port on the router. At that point, your Internet access should 'just work'. But if it doesn't, you'll have to troubleshoot.

You should disconnect it from your modem. Connect it to your computer using the Cat 5 cable. Open Internet explorer. type in where the HTTP address goes 192.168.0.0 and see if it connects. If it does it usually is looking for the Admin name and password. I am assuming your friend did not do this so just hit enter and see if you get in. You can then set-up your router and connect it to your modem. make sure you set-up a WPA or other security. and it should be something you can remember. I like WPA and use the 10 digit and one of the phone numbers I can remember like work, school, etc.

Make sure you download the drivers on your computer. You can find them at linksys's site
