Tryptophan in turkeys and pregnancy? ?
I know, I know-paranoid first pregnancy! But I've had a couple complications that have made my pregnancy scary. Has anyone heard of anything involving eating the turkey when you are pregnant (tryptophan) I know it makes you sleepy-so can it be good and alright..will it make my little girl all dopey/sleepy in my tum?

It should be perfectly fine. I've never heard of tryptophan causing a problem in pregnancy, and both my midwife from my first pregnancy and my OB from my second encouraged me to enjoy my Thanksgiving dinner, which I'm sure they wouldn't have done if there was cause for concern. Also, recent studies have shown that it's not the Tryptophan in turkey that causes you to be drowsy after Thanksgiving dinner, but rather all the carbs you consume during dinner (ie. stuffing, rolls, potatoes, etc.).

Tryptophan is an amino acid and is there is a lot more of it in other things then turkey. There is a lot in egg whites, chedder cheese, turkey, beef, and pork. I think that the Thanksgiving sleepy comes more from the big meal and lazing about on the couch then the Turkey. So enjoy your turkey and your little girl will be alright.

Tryptophan is not at all unique to turkey. I don't know why people fuss over turkey and tryptophan. There's just as much in chicken, lol.
Most people really just get sleepy because they eat too much at Thanksgiving.

Contrary to popular belief, the amount of L-Tryptophan in turkey is so minute that it doesn't really have any effect at all on people. What makes people sleepy is having a full stomach. Towards the end of my pregnancy I was given some pretty potent painkillers by my doctor that really zonked me out, but my daughter is a brilliant and healthy 2-year-old.
Long story short, it won't hurt your wee one ^.^

I ate turkey all the time while pregnant. The tryptophan in turkey does exist but you would literally have to eat like 5 20lb turkeys yourself for it to have any effect on you...and then it probably still would have none. You will be fine and you lil one will probably love it's "first" hearty Thanksgiving ( =

Tryptophan is in more than just turkey. And yes it's safe, and yes you are being paranoid! ;)
Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

Don't worry! Turkey isn't going to hurt you or the baby. If it does make you sleepy take advantage and take a nap! Enjoy the holiday and congrats.
