Monotheists, can you explain why murder is immoral without reference to God or the Bible?

If not, should we be scared?

Atheists/agnostics/deists/other, help them out.

Update:

"Bible" was rather Christian-centric of me. Please substitute other relevant text.

Update 2:

"But this they fail to add: that after you expire, Not one of all these things will fill you with desire." De Rerum Natura, Lucretius

Death does not frustrate plans/projects/desires, it merely removes them.

Update 3:

Cheruvima, I wonder if you can adequately explain the harm of death without paper telling you it's wrong. It is important, actually, since if you can't reason morally, you basically admit to having no moral agency of your own.

I don't understand why you're so upset - the question is a challege, perhaps, but it isn't an insult.

Update 4:

The question does not challenge theistic belief unless one follows Divine Command Theory, it is intended to demonstrate to any given theist whether or not they have (secular) moral agency.

Your use of the term "moral" is problematic, morality is a social construct that varies widely between cultures. Since the word "murder" commonly refers to unlawful killing as opposed to such things as capital punishment or warfare, such an act would be moral or immoral according to your opinion of the applicable legal system.

There is a Secular Humanist argument that the rightness or wrongness of an act can be determined by considering the logical impact on society if all members of the society acted in such a manner. Applying this to murder, consider a society in which anyone could kill anyone at anytime for any reason without consequence. If such a society could not function or survive, and History shows us that one can't or laws against such behavior would not be universal among human societies, then murder would be wrong, or, if you prefer, immoral, since it is behavior that makes it impossible to maintain a civilization.

As a Pagan while I acknowledge and revere the Gods I reject the idea that any work produced by human agency, including things like the Bible, can have Divine Infallibility, being of Human origin they are susceptible to Human error. Since the Gods gave us minds to use and understand the world around us and our place within it, I submit that the Secular Humanist argument can be applied to Deist theology as well, and thus conforms to the criteria of your question.

Rather easily and this has nothing to do with religion at all.

Moral acts are those of which we could say: everyone ought to do this. E.g. keep their promises.

Murder is as clear an example of the opposite of this as can be imagined. If we were all free to murder, that would be the end of us, rather quickly.

There is no moral code that permits murder, although definitions of the concept - unlawful killing - will vary somewhat between cultures. Human sacrifice, for example, may be OK in controlled circumstances.

You didn't really think your question amounted to any sort of challenge to theistic belief, did you?

Taking a human life for no logical reason is considered to be against my better judgement as a person who has compassion. I value my life the same as way as I would for someone else.

If we're saying there is no afterlife, then you are stealing the only life that person will ever have.

You are also taking them away from their family, friends, and loved ones. Plus you're causing a lot of unneccessary pain and suffering, not only for the victim but for the ones left behind.

Why would you want or expect an monotheist to answer a question without reference to the God we believe in or the Bible which contains His teachings. You acknowledge we have a belief system: monotheism. Why would you then want or expect us to function outside it, or try to force us to, or be scared if we do. You should be more frightened if we can't or won't answer questions within the framework of our belief system. I don't apologize for my belief system, and I do become afraid of those who do. If you choose to have no belief system, or a belief system that disallows God's existence, that is your business but it is not respectful of you to insinuate that we should be afraid of those who disagree with you....We should be afraid that you expect others to agree with you or be ridiculed. The answer is yes I can explain why murder is immoral without reference to God or the Bible, but I feel no need to. God and the Bible have made the answer clear. My guess is that the fact that you need to reference them means you really believe in them too---or you wouldn't feel the need to expend your time and energy trying to denegrate them.

In the name of the LORD.

    Greetings Nic4,

Murder is immoral because it is not our place to decide who should not live if the first law of nature is self-preservation.

Because a (presumably) productive member of society would be lost. That's a real bummer, considering there's no afterlife.

You are violating a person's right to live. Rights are self-evident. Besides if you do murder, you will never find peace within yourself with such violent acts.
