Relief for baby's constipation?

Our 3 month old grandson just started on some new formula a few days ago. His daddy told me his last bowl movement was unusually hard. Now he is here and very upset... nothing seems to comfort him and he is passing gas occasionally. We think he is severely constipated. Any ideas on how to relieve this?

Update:

Edit: Thanks to everyone for the great advise. We went with a smaller dose of the glycerine supositories at the recomendation of the pharmacist... he was seriously uncomfortable... actually, he seemed to be in pain. Out it came, but hard as a rock. Then we gave him some pydialite (spelling?) and he went sound to sleep.

The plan is to give him the pydialite occasionaly and the drops if that doesn't help. Thanks to everyone!

You can buy Coloxyl drops (for constipation in infants) from the chemist/pharmacy and mix it in with his formula.

If you prefer a home remedy here's a few other suggestions-

-offer the baby cooled boiled water throughout the day can help

-Adding extra water to his formula (about 15 - 20mls extra)

-If these fail, adding half a teaspoon of sugar to his formula bottle can help stimulate the stomach (do this for no longer than 24 hours though.)

    - Boiling prunes and straining the juice, combining this with its same amount of water to dilute it (e.g. 30mls strained prune juice with 30mls boiled cooled water)

I think the Coloxyl drops are probably the best way to go though. It will help!

1st of all please try the bay on an iron free or low iron alternative of the formula that he is using. Iron constipates adults and children so once remove from his diet you won't have to rely on the suppositories. Also add a dropperful of prune for every 2 ounces of milk while warm and it will help soften the bowel moventments. Suppositories work well but the poop will still be hard(so it comes out but may still hurt) because the contents haven't been broken down. By mixing the prune juice with the milk will actually help him stomach to process the formula better and the poop will come down a much softer consistency.

Water is also a great way to soften stools, so if you can get him to take a few sips that would be excellent.

    Good Luck!

Don't over feed him water (this can mess up his electrolytes), but water his formula down just a little more than called for right now (b/c he needs the nutrients from the milk, not just water). Also, don't use the thermometer as you can cause some serious damage. Try lying him on his back & flexing his knees to his chest. Also, warm the formula well as this helps promote a bowel movement. You can also check at your local pharmacy for glycerin suppositories (these are a much safer form of rectal stimulation than the thermometer)

When my daughter was having problems with her formula, our pediatrician recommended giving her 2 oz of prune juice mixed with 2 oz of water once a day to keep her regular so she wouldn't get constipated. It worked wonders. She eventually grew out of it and ntrow just needs her formula and whatever solids I give her for the day. If he is constipated now, bend his knees up to his tummy it will help him to push it out. Bend them up and straighten them out like a bicycle and his intestines will get moving. Hope he feels better! :)

Use a glycerin suppository. Well, half of one. Warm it a bit in your hand and then...well, you know where suppositories go. Put the lil man's diaper back on. Within a few minutes, things should ah...loosen up. :)

you need to give him some warm boiled water. Less than one oz. Or get something to put warm water in adn out on his stomach above his clothes. It helps relax the muscles and allow him to get rid of the gas ( isusally use latex gloves because they give more warmth). Or Mylcon drops worked wonders as well! Good luck !

A little Karo syrup in his water or formula and he will have a good bowel movement. The suppositories are way too big and are painful to even toddlers-so don't go there.

Give him plain water in between his feedings.

Try a rectal thermometer. It will help loosen it up :)
