Looking for a Blu ray player?
I want to get a blu ray player and I was wondering if I should get an actual blu ray player from around 250 to 300$ price range or if I should get a PS3? PS3 would mainly be for blu ray so gaming would just be a bonus. Is the blu ray on the ps3 as good as a standard blu ray player made by samsung or sony?

I have just spent the better part of today researching, reading and writing about blu-ray players. I saw a lot of praise for the Sony PlayStation 3. CNET Reviews said that the PS3 is the most recommendable Blu-ray player out there. They felt that most people would be well suited with the PS3 at least until the standalone units cost much less and perform as well. If you would actually use the machine for gaming, that is a huge bonus in my mind. It certainly sounds like it is as good, actually better, than many standard blu-ray players by Samsung or Sony.
You can see the results of my research on a page that I have created at http://www.squidoo.com/blu-rayplayer.

The best blu-ray player on the market at the moment is the PS3. It can be updated in terms of software and features. Currently the update by Sony is called Blu-Ray Live 2.0. Most Blu-Ray dvd players will cost between $250.00 to $400.00 depending on the brand and some can not be updated to the current profile of 2.0. Some will only have the profile 1.1
If you want a gaming machine with Blu-Ray then you will likely spend $400.00 for a PS3. Otherwise you should wait until the market drops down Blu-Ray dvd players. By Christmas retail stores will sell Blu-Ray dvd players for probably less than $200 dollars.

From engadget.com:
Criterion Collection uses PS3 as reference Blu-ray player
Yeah, you read that correctly -- the obsessive audiophiles / videophiles at the Criterion Collection use Sony's PlayStation 3 as its reference Blu-ray player. In all honesty, we can't say we're too surprised. Time and again, Sony's latest console has been rated very highly as a dedicated BD deck, and the plentiful firmware updates ensure that it's always at the forefront of whatever interactive functionality is next. This snippet of factual goodness was extracted from a recent writeup that took an in-depth look at how the CC would be revamping its home theater, and even famed calibration guru Joe Kane gave his approval at using the console for playing back Blu-ray Discs.
'Nuff said.

If you have a large DVD collection, consider the Samsung BD-P2550. It has the best upconversion chipset in the world (HQV Realta) and will make your 16:9 DVDs look 99% as good as you new Blu-Ray movies. It is also profile 2.0 compliant and will play Netflix online offerings like a Roku. The PS3 is more versatile, but for pure movie performance and getting the most out of your old DVDs, get the Samsung 2550. I've seen them at Best Buy for $300.

PS3 PS3 NO NO NO People are stupid out there. PS3 is upgradeable yes but for some reason they will not fix the TruHD and DTS MASTER AUDIO signal with sony update DTS MA did not do a thing because when i had a PS3 part of my home theater system it was always at UNCOMPRESSED AUDIO. Now sony updates are for the games nothing else. Now i waited and bought me a
Sony BDP-S350 BluRay player update profile 2.0 because i have a New Onkyo receiver that has all the decoding DTSMA,TruHD, and Uncompressed Audio. If you have an older receiver go with Sony BDP-S550 BluRay player because it has the DTSMA decoder built in and profile 2.0. My opinion i think sony players are lot better picture and stable. Remember everyone has in opinion.

I'm no electronics techie type, just a happy PS3 owner. I am simply amazed at the quality of our regular DVDs when played through the PS3. We purchased it at the same time we purchased our Sony Bravia 52" LCD... a 60Hz (there is a limit to our bank account) model, and we love our new toys! And we haven't even purchased a PS3 game yet.

ps3 all the way ... they will eventually include all the decoders .. can play games .. and most importantly is updateable ..and always will be ... oh dont forget you can STREAM AUDIO AND VIDEO from any computer on the network wirelessly.
so any music/video you have downloaded on your computer ..dont have to waste time buring them to disc ... can just stream them to your ps3 ... or put them on a flash drive and plug it into the ps3 .. i dont think any other bluray player on the market..at any price can do all these things.
