Do i have to go to work for train on my day off? ?

I am on a salary, i work full time.

Next week i am expected to go to work on my day off to do training for 1 hour in the middle of the day. This means i can't go away for the weekend, just for 1 hour of training.

I was given 36 hours notice.

Do i legally have to go? I doubt i'll get paid as i don't get paid for extra hours. I have no contracts of employment saying i do or don't have to do this training.

What can they do if i don't go. It doesn't affect my ability to do the job by not doing the training.

PS i'm australian

Update:

its training on how to use a fire extinguisher

Probably. Best thing to do would be to call your boss and ask if it's mandatory. If it is and you don't show up, they have legal standing to fire you or keep you from coming back into work until you've done the training. Even over something as silly as that. Chances are they HAVE to do the training for safety reasons and it probably is mandatory.

I don't know if you can afford to miss the training. If you didn't need the additional training for your job or your future job within the company, they would not be asking you to go to the training. You might think that it doesn't affect your ability to do the job by not doing the training but your company thinks you need it. They are not doing it just to be annoying or mean. It's your choice either to go or not to go, but you would not reflect favorably with your boss when come time for raises and promotions. When time comes for office down sizing, person who wouldn't bother to show up on training would be the first to go.
