How soon can dogs go to eating once a day?

I have 2 dogs - one a yr old, the other 8 months - I know we can do once a day with the older one, but was wondering if we could do the same with the younger one - it seems to be they are not wanting one of their meals anyway, but happily eat later in the day. Any thoughts welcome

Update:

They are both cavalier king charles spaniels

I feed mine twice a day.

I used to just leave a bowl out all the time but 2 of my dogs were overweight & the other one was having to fight for her food.

Now I put 3 bowls out in the morning & leave them down for 1 hour. If they eat good. If they don't eat they have to wait until evening. In the evening I put another 3 bowls of food out for them & leave them down for 1 hour.

It took about a month for my dogs to transition from always having food to only having food twice a day for an hour, but they eventually figured it out. I think now the hardest part is on me, trying to make sure I'm on time to feed them.

I agree with those who feed twice a day. I have a bloat-prone breed and have always split their daily intake into two meals (more with those who have recovered from bloat!!). Personally I find it breaks their day up to have a breakfast and a tea. It's your choice, but for me, this works well. Taking your younger one down to one (or two) meals per day would depend on body weight really and how much exercise they are getting. You might try it (two meals) and see what happens. But I'd recommend twice a day rather than once.

PS Bloat - ie Gastric Torsion. The full torsion is where the stomach bloats, and twists on itself, shutting off both ends. Unless the situation is corrected, and FAST, the dog can, and does, die. Because of the increased size of the stomach as it bloats, other organs can be involved, eg the spleen. One of mine ruptured his spleen at the same time, and it had to be removed. He blew when he was 8, and lived to be 14 without a repeat. If you are 'lucky' the stomach only bloats, and intubation, to remove the gas and contents, is possible. If it twists, the only option is surgery and it's essential to get to the vet as quickly as possible.

You should really feed 2 times a day The larger breed dogs can get bloat (stomach twisted around intestine) if fed only one large meal a day.2 smaller meals is allot more healthy and safe.

IMO dogs should be fed twice a day - one once. How would you like to only eat one meal a day - you'd be starving for the other 23 hrs, 50 mins of the day.

Especially with smaller dogs its not wise at all. We have a labrador - she gets fed breakfast and supper.

First, what do you advise by ability of genuine dogs nutrition? Kibble? uncooked? Pooing as quickly as each a million-2 days isn't commonly used. He could be going a million-thrice an afternoon It *might desire to* be worms based at something of the indications. that's some thing the place you will be able to desire to call the vet.

All my dogs, large breed and small, are fed twice a day. 24 hours is too long to have an empty stomach. Dogs will vomit foam if their stomach is empty for too long.

Two smaller meals are better than one large one.

Personally, I would give them 2 meals a day (one in the morning and one at night) because if you just give them one meal a day they could get hungry and destructive.

Twice a day, and try to make it about the same time every day because dogs like routine. this goes for both dogs....
