a refrigerator/freezer question please...?

i have a whirlpool side by side refrigerator/freezer, dated 10-03, model# ED0GTQXMQ00.

it sits in my shop which right now the temp in there is about 30*.

my problem is the freezer isn't keeping ice cream cold. the ice cream is slightly melting and soft. now i have 2 bags of ice in there and they seem to be staying frozen. yesterday afternoon i turned the freezer cooler switch from "b" to "c" to get it colder and i did hear it "kick in", but 24hrs later and 10* cooler temps in the shop have resulted in softer ice cream. the ice cream was fresh yesterday and was completely frozen hard when i brought it home. tonight its soft.

question: is the outside ambient air temp in the shop affecting the freezers ability to cool or is something else wrong here?

on the refrigerator side i am experiencing no problems at all.

the coils underneath and in back are clean of lint or dirt.

any thoughts before i call sears to come look at it?

thank you.

Update:

manual gone, fridge was supposta go with my home when it was repossessed but i kept it to cover the $22,000 down payment and the 5yrs worth of payments i made on the house before the landowner decided he could make more off of it by selling it to workers for the new casino that was built just 1 mile from me. thats what happens with "no credit check" home sales...i was 1 month ahaed and was given 5 days 2 vacate...an atty said the contract allowed me 2 walk away at any time i wanted, and the landowner to regain possession 4 any reason anytime he wanted.

Update 2:

i have the most expensive refrigerator/freezer whirlpool ever made...cost me about $40,000 and the rest of a home. thats kinda why i wanna keep it running...forever...can't afford another one, lol.

Update 3:

thor...i believe ambient temp may be the cause of this also, but what puzzles me is the ice cream went soft but the 2 bags of ice are still frozen and have been for the last month since i put them in there...

as far as door seals, i put a piece of paper between the door and frame and closed the door and tried pulling the paper...although it came out i met with resistance all the way around so i must believe the seal is working and a level placed on top of it when i put it in the shop said it was level all ways, but good thought tho.

may just havta quit buying ice cream this winter...frozen dinners in there still staying frozen also.

    It is normal.

Yes, they need to be in a warm room for the freezer to stay frozen.

The fresh food temperature is more critical, needing to stay between 34 and 40 degrees. So the thermostat measures the fresh food temperature.

But if the room is 30 degrees then *it never needs to run* for the fresh food section and then the freezer also warms up to 30 degrees. That is barely freezing and makes for soft ice cream.

Also be aware that if the room is below freezing then items in the refrigerator will freeze and cans of soda can explode.

To work well the refrigerator needs to be in ambient temps above 55.

This is mentioned in your manual.

believe it or not a freezer with a frig attached needs to be in a warmer temp than 30° in order to tell the frig t-stat to turn on the compressor...your fig is probably cold enough for a ham sandwich, but your Freezer is not going to keep ice cream frozen solid

keep it simple man...you wrote a book....take the thing inside and buy yourself a little freezer only type appliance for the shop

A simple thing but sometimes garage floors are poured on a slope...which may be causing a door problem? Just a thought. The other is that refers work better at a normal house temp. Ya, I know, sounds strange to me too. But they create the cold from the warm air.Good luck You sound as bad as me......I had a stock broker steal a quarter of a million from me and it's my fault.......the state says I can hire my own attorney......but they can't do anything about him and his 6 states licenses and bonds......I guest he just buys them and hangs them on his wall. Why do I need the state??? Great country, what the he** is going on?
