how does WoW PVP work?
I am on the earthen ring (RP) server and was running through Hinterlands. My character was "disabled" for PvP yet I was able to be attacked/killed by the Horde. I asked my boyfriend and he is also puzzled how this happened on a rp only server with pvp disabled. There was no challenge for a duel - simply victim of a random ganking *sigh*
any ideas?
was a horde character not a npc
i dont attack the opposite side for this reason alone. no npc attacks! it was hinterlands b/c I was returning from "saving sharpbeak" didn't work at reset when I died b/c I rez'd at the spirit guide and got ganked by a undead hunter.

This sounds like you got ganked by players who have hacked the game. I don't have any proof the hack, but have heard rumors for years now, that there is a bug/hack where you can attack a unflagged faction. And since you mention you were ganked again at the rez spot, that makes me believe you were picked out/on by mean spirited players.
It's players like this that make gaming un-fun. I am sorry to hear about it, best you can do is report it ie: names, times, location etc.

Are you sure it was a PvE server?
Are you sure it was whordies and not Horde guards? The town guards are regular mobs and CAN kill you, and drawing aggro from them will also turn on your PVP flag (as you are "attacking" a horde town).
Had you recently attacked a whordie? Is it possible your PvP flag wasn't reset yet?

Were you killed by other players??
-If so, probably a small error in the game. You might've accidently been PvP, but when you died it reset.
Was it by NPC gaurds?
-Then, yeah, that will always happen. If you even were near one and accidently clicked to attack while running, then you're PvP might have turned on...

I think Hinterlands is a contested area right? I believe in contested areas one side can attack the other like that.
