Why Did Christ Choose Peter?

Over John? John was the one he loved most, John was the one that stood at the feet of the Cross.

So why Build the Church on Peter?

Peter was the natural leader of the disciples. The other disciples looked to Peter for direction. He was constantly asking Jesus questions. He was invariably Jesus' companion, including the pivotal moments like the Transfiguration. He was always the first to respond to Jesus' call to faith, whether in walking on water or recognizing that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God.

This loud, audacious man--who sank in the water, who cut off the soldier's ear, who denied Christ three times--became the bedrock upon which Jesus was to begin his church.

Throughout his self-wrought fiascoes, Peter was learning. "Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious," he later wrote. "And like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 2:4-5).

John was indeed a beloved disciple, and wrote the most powerful book ever written about Christ--the Gospel of John. He had the guts to stand by Jesus at the crucifixion. But it was Peter who had the gift of leadership needed to take the helm of the church after the Resurrection.

Jesus chose Peter As The Foundation and Head of His Church On Earth:

Jesus chose Peter as the foundation stone; (THE ROCK)! [MATTHEW 16:18]

Jesus told Peter to feed His lambs! [John 21:15-17]

Peter was a recipient of special revelations:

Mt. 16:16-17; "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Acts 10:9-101 "What God had cleansed, you must not call common."

Peter was a recipient of special prophecies:

Mark 13:1-3, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down.'

Mk. 14:27-31; "Truly. I say to you, this very night, before the **** crows twice, you will deny me three times."

Jn. 21:18-191 "Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go."

    Jesus asks, Peter answers:

Mt. 16:15-16, Jesus asks the twelve a question that Peter answers:

"But who do you say the I am?" Simon Peter (Simon the ROCK) replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

John 6:67-68, Jesus asks a question of the 12 Apostles; Peter answered.

"Jesus said to the twelve, "Will you also go away?" Simon Peter (Simon the Rock) answered him..." "Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life..."

even though Saint Peter ran away after denying Jesus three times in the courtyard Jesus loved him just like he loved Saint John and all the Holy Apostles Saints

SAint peter also told Jesus that he was the son of the Living God which is God himslef who came as the son and Jesus gave him the Keys of Heaven to guard his universal Catholic Church

and when they at Mount Hebron during the transfiguration Saint Peter

witnessed the metamorphesis of Jesus Christ who is God the son with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit together with Prophet Moses and Elijah with the Holy Trinity one God and Saint Peter told God the son Jesus Christ to build one tent for him aone tent for Moses and one tent for Elijah

He was the only witness when Jesus said do u love me 3times ? and Jesus said Feed my lambs and Feed my sheeps a very extremely indication that Saint Peter the blessed Apostle was the High apsotle Prince chosen by God to lead Jesus Christ the same and True God over his Universal Church which is the Roman Catholic Church

  • Although St, Peter was a great believe in Jesus, but, Peter doubted his own faith. Jesus knew this and made St Peter his leader, why you say? Because Like Abraham who doubted his faith also and was tried by sacrificing his son, and was stopped by God. Jesus did the same to St Peter. By making the most faithful, His leader.

Yes, St John was faithful, but his mission was to care for Jesus' most precious possession, His Mother. St Peter's faith was so deep that he had to be shown just how deep it really was. Sounds confusing I know but, like I said before only God can read our hearts. God bless you.

BTW St Peter was so sorrowful after he denied Jesus, he cried for the rest of his life for this. And the tears wore grooves into his cheeks, from the crying. Just thought you should know this.

Because Peter is the most typically human of the disciples, and there needed to be someone who could empathise with everyone in the world to lead the Church.

  • 1 decade ago

Because St. Peter was the Apostle who recognized Our Lord Jesus as the Christ.

Christ actually didn't choose Peter. According to the Gnostic gospels he chose Magdelene. It was the Catholic Church at the council of Nicea that chose Peter.

    Talk about historical revisionism.

maybe as he denied Jesus three times he felt he reflected human weakness. I think he became Peter (the Rock) earlier than this. His original name was Simon.

He used him as an example. If we follow Christ, we are the church.

It was because Peter answered the question that Jesus had asked..Remember Jesus saying that you were given that answer by God..........
