what is the best way to make a dog stay?
I have a lab mix puppy who is eager to learn, she will sit and lay down and leave something (for example if I put a treat in front of her and tell her to leave it, she will) but I cant seem to get her to stay. when someone comes over she jumps all over them and tries to run out the door. Ive been doing clicker training which works really well, but again, she wont stay, if I just move a step away she gets up. what is the best way to teach a dog to stay?

Easy!
have 10 minute training sessions every time you can
make her sit. walk 2 steps, tell her STAY if she doesnt walk a couple more steps if she doesnt pick her up and put her back and tell her sit and walk back 2 steps and tell her STAY
keep walking back a couple more steps and finally when you feel youve walked enough tell her to COME and tell her good girl give her a treat.
I have a SUPER hyper dog and i tought her in a couple days
also with the door thing, put her on a leash and walk by the door, make her sit. and open the door a crack if she gets up say NO and make her sit again , keep opening the door little by little and make sure YOU walk out the door first. your the boss not the dog so by you walking out first that makes her know that you are in control and there will be less pulling on the leash.
hope i help!

You need more correction. Praise only goes so far.
I don't mean beat the dog, I mean when it gets up from stay, you have to "no" or "ah ah!" and put it back.
Don't praise or allow the desired "stay" to end until you give a "release" command.
It's commonly forgotten, but a dog will get up whenver it feels like, if it's not told every time when it can get up.
This also all has to be done at the appropriate difficulty level for the dog. You can't start out leaving the dog in a sit stay in a field full of cats. You have to start small, short distances, short time, and few distractions, and work up from there. That way you get to use more praise, and fewer corrections.
Set your dog up for success, and you'll have success.
Also if it's too hard to control the dog for now whne guests come, leash the dog, and work on training at quieter times for now.

Get a short leather or nylon leash and attach it to your dog. Tell your dog to sit and praise it with a treat. Then hold your palm out facing the dog and slowly walk backwards 1 step. As you are walking backwards, say the dog's name followed by "stay". If the dog doesn't move, immediately praise the dog lavishly and give it a treat. If the dog moves don't give it praise or a treat. Just bring it back to its original spot and start again. Gradually move back 2 steps, 3 steps etc. Say the dog's name, "stay" and reward. Once your dog seems to be catching on, remove the leash and back up 8 -15 steps. Again say the dog's name, give the command and reward. Then using the same sequence, walk around the dog and reward if the dog doesn't move.
Hope this helps

Don't move from her side until she stays when your beside her.Keep the leash on her and when she has that down good put her in the stay and take a step so that you're standing in front of her facing her, wait a minute then step back beside her wait then say OK to release her. When she has that down make it two steps and keep going until you can get to the end of the leash and then keep going until you can walk across the room. Don't rush it, better to work it slowly.

Repetition, repetition, repetition. Each time she breaks, take her back to the original spot and tell her to stay along with a flat hand signal. Leave her for only a few moments, then call her and give a treat. That's how I have taught all my dogs the stay.

Watch The Dog Whisperer. He does it all the time. You'll be able to get a better understanding from seeing how Cesar Milan does it. He's a genius.

You need to make your question a little more clearer..
You want to teach her to just "stay" when you say it or you want her to "stay" when company comes over?

try taking her to puppy classes, they can give you more hands on help and the other animals/people will provide a realistic distraction to help her learn to focus on you
