I hear you about the not wanting to go to the store. White onion is a more milder flavor. Depending on the what the recipe is (chicken, fish, etc), you may want to substitute dried chives for seasoning, you may want to put a few of those in just to give a little bit of a bite (like onion).

Depends on what you're making.
If the dish you're making is going to be cooked - should be fine. If it's for a salad or a dish where the green onion is supposed to be served raw, I would say no. Chives would be a better substitution, or just leave the onion out altogether.

Ehh.. not really. Green onions aren't really onions like a yellow or white onion.
Sorry.. you may have to go get some.. Or start growing some in your house so you always have some.

it depends on what it is you are cooking as in general terms spring onions have a much milder flavor and dont need as much cooking as ordinary onion bur making a roast should be okay, however oriental cooking calls for specific flavors and would generally need to be followed exactly

I've substituted white onion for green ones when I was in a pinch and it works just fine.

If you're making something raw, like a salad, you will notice a great difference. If you're cooking it into a sauce or sauteeing it, you can get away with it more easily.
