I am not sure what an Italian street fair is. Are you looking for a particular genre or country? What comes to mind right away are: 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergère' by Edouard Manet (1882) because of the impact of the image of the woman at the bar. 'The Green Stripe (Madame Matisse) (1905) It is colourful and original. The vertical green stripe running down the subject's face allows the head to compete with the assertive background. Matisse placed eequal emphasis on background and foreground. 'The Mystery and Melancholy of the Street' by Giorgio De Chirico (1914), because it is the only recent Italian painting that come to mind apart form Modigliani's portrait of the woman with a long neck You could try looking up pictures by Frida Kahlo, especially the ones with the monkeys. Diego Rivera also has some interesting murals that could be reproduced without too much trouble. Also, the Kathmandu artist Shyam Shrestha has a colourful painting called Brewing Rakshi in Nepal (pre-2000) wihich is colourful and stands out.

It could also be Venus, Cupid, Mercury and another little amoretto. Have a look at the Correggio Venus & Cupid in the National Gallery London and see if the style is similar. It's not the one you describe, but could give you a way of eliminating the subject at least.
