I second that the SB-600 is a good compromise between power and cost. It can also be used as a wireless remote flash (with your D80 pop-up flash as commander) - so you don't have to buy the SB-800 to use Nikon's amazing AWL (advanced wireless lighting).

The SB-600 would be the general-purpose choice.
The SB-400's power is kind of low, and the SB-800 & SB-900 would most likely be overkill unless you're planning a multiple-flash system using CLS.
