Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution spells out the oath as follows:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
That's the whole thing.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Since the Constitution directly calls for a government of, by, and for the people, promising to protect the Constitution IS a promise to defend the people.

The first person is right, I don't know who gave them thumbs down. But the swear to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. The constitution covers the citizens of the US. So in essence, every Citizen, not every person in the US.
