Is it right for a teacher to talk about politics?
Today we had a substitute teacher who said that Bush has destroyed our country and all conservatives are "nut jobs."He also did impressions of McCain and Palin and kept said Palin was stupid, her state doesn't even matter, and then ranted about her pregnant daughter. He told us almost all of his political views and said we should all be glad Obama is going to be president.
I know he is entitled to his view but I thought teachers weren't supposed to talk about that stuff. Couldn't he be fired for that?

No, they should keep it to themselves. I remember having teachers who would talk about their politics, sometimes very extensively. They need to stop trying to brainwash children with their own political views. There should be a harsh penalty for this.

In the 1914-1945 European war about 70 million died directly as a result of their political ignorance. It is wrong for a teacher not to. Indoctrination of particular views is another matter, however.

Teachers need to speak with students about POLITICS . They should be professional and keep their personal views to themselves.
I agree with him but I'm not giving my personal views to children in a classroom . I think the principal should have a little discussion with him about professionalism on the job.

I think teachers should talk about politics but not it the way you mentioned. Teachers should ask questions for students to think and debated about. Questions that will help young people figure out what it is they beleive in and what they feel is important. Not to get on a soap box and preach about how their ways are right.

I'm sorry, but I actually have a hard time believing that things transpired as you described.
That being said, if they did happen that way, your substitute teacher has horrible judgment, and should not be teaching kids.

Even Better:

What was your real teacher doing all this time?
Where have you been the last 8 years ... oh sorry, probably Kindergarten or just watching cartoons on TV!

Yes he is supposed to be neutral. Please report him besides he is supposed to be teaching facts not stupid opinions.
To all of the answers below who think it is fact what the teacher is saying are just lying to themselves. Sorry but that is true.

Yes but they should take care not to push their political ideals on their impressionable students.

Your teacher isn't "discussing" anything. He is giving what is a called a rant - a biased opinion on something without giving any substantial explanation.
Your sub is an idiot.
