What are the advantages of getting a freeview set top box?
And do I even need one?
I have just bought a new Sony TV and when I plugged in my indoor aerial it picks up lots of digital channels. This is all without one of those freeview boxes. So why do people spend money buying those set top boxes if your TV can pick up the signal already? What does it do? Does it pick up more channels or something?

You have a tv with built-in freeview so you don't need a separate box to see digital channels. People with older tv's which are not digital do need a freeview box.
There would be an advantage to you having a separate freeview box with a built in hard-drive because that is the easiest way to record tv from digital channels, particularly if it has a true twin tuner as this means you can record two channels at once:)

you are either very lucky and live in a area that already picks up digital channels or freeview is Incorporated into your set
it is still handy to have a freeeview box so that you can record one programme whilst watching another as when the switchover does take place you will be getting all your channels on one number on your tv

You do not need to buy a freeview box if your TV already has one built in.
If you didn't know old TVs (even black and white ones) do not already have freeview built in until now.
This is why I brought a new Sony TV like you because my old Toshiba TV doesn't have freeview built in.
Freeview is digital as it receives and converts analogue signals to digital.

Most new televisions have Freeview built-in.
Most old televisions don't.
So, if you have an old TV and you want to receive Freeview, you either buy a Freeview box for about £20, or a new TV for several hundred quid.
And we are in a recession, remember...

Well it's like this. Most televisions sold, until recently, did not have an integrated digital receiver. You are lucky that yours does. My fukc off expensive Sony flat screen jobbie does not so it has to suffer the indignity of having a digibox lurking next to it.

your new tv obviously has freeview built in, theyre fazing out using analouge signals and will be soon switching to digital making analouge tvs useless with a freeview box.
a free viewbox converts the digital signals into analouge for analouge tvs to display.

You can record / also in high dirt areas such as a garage it would be better as all have to do is buy a indoor antennae such as from dick smith and connect it as high as you can and Bob might just end up being your uncle and you would be roaring to go
