Why are video games good?

I'm doing a persuasive speech and I need three main points as to why video games are good. I would really appreciate any help you guys have to offer. So far I have:

video games can be a good form of exercise since some schools are using DDR machines for gyms and also, Wii fit is good to exercise with as well.

Video games can be a form of entertainment. Video games like the MGS series offer cinematic stories for players to unfold as they playthrough the games.

Video games can be educational. Games like brain age and a few others i have listed on my outline.

I want to make this speech as good as I can, so please throw good main points at me for me to replace with any of these or help me expand on these...I would really appreciate it.

It has been proven that surgeons who are gamers perform better in laparoscopic surgery (surgery performed with the aid of cameras and a monitor). Furthermore, there seems to be a correlation between laparoscopic skills and suturing skill. The referenced page gives more solid figures, but basically it comes down to 3+ hrs of gaming per week translated to ONE THIRD less errors and ONE THIRD FASTER operations.

Argue with those statistics mom and dad. ;-)

Video games can also benefit children in other ways "by improving gamers’ problem-solving skills, dexterity, and scientific thinking" as mentioned in this article:

I did a research paper on this same topic, some of my main points were...

The brain age game is supposed to reduce the risk of alzheimer's.

DDR is helping the fight against childhood obesity.

Businesses are benefiting from more interesting and memorable training programs.

    "Edutainment" helping public schools.

Included lots of the helpful sources there at the bottom. I figure debunking the myths, such as video games leading to violence, should help a lot too. Hope your speech goes well!

For me, video games were good because some of the n64 games helped me to learn how to read and with games like zelda i learned reasoning skills some of my friends still havent yet. You can also pick up helpful things from games such as how to act, right from wrong, how to interact with others and other things (not related to GTA) It is a really big stress reliever for me even on my worst days so i can just relax on my bed and play some games with my friends in a friendly competition that isnt as tense for me as sports. Video games also are a place for me do demonstrate my skills, wether it be finding ways around a problem in Mario or even Halo, working together with others, or perception and reflexes

Videos games let you get out of the real world for a while which will relieve stress and other stuff. They can be based on real events which can be a learning experience. Video games can also Teach people to do different jobs. For instance the army uses video games to train soldiers. Well thats all I can think of. I hope this helped.

I do a lot of writing and journalism for my highschool and trust me for every fact or point like their good for you or they help your brain is just going to spark a counter arguement in the doubters head as soon as they hear a point that you make. Trust me on this I did youth court and the main way for persuasion to work is to say something that is not counter-able. An example of this would be to take previous said statements of the other side and counter those rather then supply more for the other side to attack. Like if you talked about "myths" around video games such as how people say video games ruin your eyes, but in reality they don't a lack of a good source of light damages your eyes not a screen. Things like that take statements that are often used to attack video games and make them seem blown out of proportion. Like David Cross said, "hey what were the video games Hitler played? better yet the entire german nation??"

Be laid back about it the least stressed you are and calm about it the more it seems like what your saying isn't so bad after all. Bring up points that they themselves aren't counter-able. Such as if you talked about how video games open up kids to people all around the world. I use to have some friends in WoW who lived in the Netherlands and Europe and two of my closest wow friends were from Michigan and Florida while I'm in Arizona. It's almost like a social networking site. I mean how do you counter to that point? "Oh well social diversity is bad" I mean you can't. When I did Youth Court I use to write down all my questions then write down every single objection I could think to them to counter point if someone objected to my statement. So always keep in mind your opponents move. Debate and persuasion is like a game itself.

Sorry this is kinda long, but trust me these points will help you for life if you use them right.

Source(s): Reporter for my school newspaper, frequent blogger, juvenile attorney, and I just love to write.

I think the 3 you have are good, another one could be that some help with problem solving skills, and stress release (not sure if that is a healthy form of stress release though). They help me to get my mind off things, and sometimes get rid of anger, but again not sure if that is good.

You could also put that many video games, such as age of empires is based around real events (It could add to your focus on education).

I learnt much more from video games than from school.
