I can tell you that the substance inside of the flourescent bulb is a hazardous material. You do not want to get it in a cut. There is some mercury in it.

Fluorescent bulbs are filled with gas, and as an electric charge is sent through the gas it lights up. Normal bulbs use a tungsten filament that brightens when an electric current passes through it.
