Can anyone be satisfied with near equality?

Over the past few days I have seen several respondents to questions state LGBT couples should push for civil unions with benefits rather than same gender marriage. One even said that or a "don't ask don't tell" policy is the way to go. To me the first suggestion would be like running a mile and declaring victory in a marathon. The second one doesn't even deserve rebuttal. Isn't anything less than full equality inequality? I guess I just don't understand some folks way of thinking.

Update:

Rosie: My fear is the steps will be like those black citizens took when freed from slavery. The second step took the better part of a century to reach. And they still weren't more than halfway up the ladder then.

Whether the seats in the front of the bus are for some people while the seats in the back are for others, one water fountain is for some people while another water fountain is for others, or a marriage license is for some people while a "Civil Union" or "Domestic Partnership" is for others, all employ the same discriminatory reasoning of Separate but Equal.

    Yeah and No,

I look at is like a ladder you wanna keep steping up until you reach the top. Each rung on the ladder gets better or (higher), and you cant stop climbing until you run out of rungs or options and you dont want to take steps down. Sorta take what you get but dont take your eye of the prize.

All this climbing has made me thirsty lol.

Source(s): Toff well right now black rights arent in the spotlight they have made it to the top of the ladder especially having a Black president. With black rights out of the spotlight everyone can focus on GLBT rights the way I see it we are in the spotlight now and what we do with the spotlight will be important or how we handle it. We must not give up

    Toff,

You're absolutely right. But I question the feasibility of gay marriage. Over 30 states have banned gay marriage and several states have banned gay adoption..the reality of it is that most americans don't view gay rights as civil rights....it's sad but true.

I am a gay man, and I think that anything less than full equality is well....inequality.

It's just a shame more people don't see it our way.

Not quite. That is like going to McDonald's and getting the Happy Meal, but there not being a toy inside the box, not worth a crap.

Well. If the civil union/domestic partnership is exactly identical to a marriage other that the name than yes. Marriage by any other name is still a marriage. Don't fight over a word.

  • You are dreaming Utopian fallacies. The socio-political concept of "Equality" is an abstraction.
