First, he needs to have a wireless network adapter in the laptop. I don't know if the D600 has one built-in or if you need to add one on. If you need one, you can find the PC card types at retail or on line pretty inexpensively. there are some USB based wireless adapters, but I don't know the quality of the signal reception. One should work OK in that Dell, and they are a bit cheaper.

You say you hooked up the router. I will assume that you mean to an internet service modem, like a cable or DSL modem, right?

Now, if all is in place, he should check for the presence of the network with Windows. Once the system detects the network, he should be able to connect.

You have to get the Linksys Router's User Manual, AND the laptop User Manual, by Model number, from the manufacturer's website FIRST.

Then, read them both, the step by step should be in there.

TIP: Both PC and router need to have Wireless built-in, the Dell should be OK. RTFM to see if the Router is Wireless.

We can't help further without the Router Model Number.
