What is the difference between the two "Drive" gears on my car?

I have a '99 Sable with an auto tranny, on the shifter thing it shows:

P

R

N

D

D

1

The first "D" is colored in white, while the 2nd D is not. What is the difference? Which one should be used?

    Use the first one.

You use the first one as a 3rd gear drive. It is used on highways where the speed is faster. It keeps the car much looser. The second D is your 2nd gear. You use that more in like neighborhoods and stuff. It keeps the car stiffer and when you aren't on the gas, it automatically slows the car down. It is really a good gear. I usually don't use it when I drive much, because I get out of the neighborhood and right on the highways, so it doesn't do muh for me. But if you were driving in bumper to bumper traffic or ina neighborhood of sorts, then it is a great gear to use.

The second "D" ( directly over the "1" ) is a gear range between drive and low 1; on older vehicles it used to be referred to as low 2. The first D, in white, indicates the primary drive gear and should be used for general driving.
