Hair color question for professionals?
I am a dark brunette. I get my hair colored a few times a year and I like being a brunette. HOWEVER, every time I go, my hair ends up being almost black. I hate it and am starting to think I am going to dye my hair with OTC stuff. I always go in with multiple pictures, dark, rich brown but tell them I do NOT want black hair. The last time, I finally called the stylist back. She put a few highlights in my hair, which I normally do not do. After a few weeks it was manageable, but still that underneath color is too dark. I am getting so discouraged! I go to good, reputable salons, pay usually close to or over $100. Can anyone color my hair correctly?
I don't ever tell my stylist I want to be darker. My hair is very dark brown to begin with. I always want a warm golden brown, no red. I even bring pics to show them and it still isn't close. I did go to the same stylist for approx 4 yrs and I loved the way she cut my hair. Out of all the times she colored it, I liked it maybe 2-3 times. Now I have gone to a new stylist and basically the same thing is going on.

I actually just asked this exact question 2 days ago, and got no helpful answers. I alsways bring a picture, or actual hair sample, and it ALWAYS ends up black when they do it. I dont think there is any way to get a rich chocolate colour woth out being black first =( its so depressing =(

If your hair is dark brown, you can't go darker without going black or close to it. All a stylist can do to change the color of your brown is to change the tone - for example, put a little red in it etc. Otherwise, if you want more of a caramel brown, you would have to go a couple shades lighter than your natural color. You need to stop telling stylist you want to be darker & start telling them you want to be a different shade of brown without going darker. You can go lighter without going too light, & without using bleach. I think it's just mis-communication.
OTC color will not color over top of previously colored hair, it will either make your hair darker or do nothing.

Being that your hair is already a deep brown to begin with your hair color will turn out to be a dark brown when they add color to it and because you are not adding highlights it will lay flat. With the washings and sun it tends to fade to the color you like because your natural highlights start to show through.
You might want to try color shampoo. You can get it at places like Sally's for a reasonable price. Your natural color will shine through the color glazed shampoo but will also add the rich color that your are looking for with out being the dull dark color you describe as black.
Give it a try... and good luck!! I know how hard it is to look in the mirror when you don't like your hair...
