Homeschool curriculum question?

i've been homeschooled for ahwhile, and i know exactly what you mean. fro example, we use mostly the Abeka seris, but in some subjects, such as math, saxon or bob jones might be better. all of the curriculum wesites sell their books individually, but you might also want to look into homeschool book sales at some local curches with co-ops or yard sales. ebay is also a good place to look. also, if you know anyone who has been homeschooled for ahwhile, try asking them for hand-me-down textbooks. (i have a few of those myself, and we always save our old books for either my sisters or someone else).

Some ideas in addition to the websites others have already mentioned:

Have you thought about just not using textbooks at all for certain subjects? For example, there's no reason you absolutely must have a history textbook. Find an outline of your state's requirements for history instructions in 2nd and 6th grades, then bring the kids to the library and start collecting books. Unless there are no libraries open to the public in your area or unless those libraries are insanely tiny and aren't connecting to an interlibrary loan system, you should be able to get books on just about any period in history you could possibly need. Plus, your kids can read books from many different viewpoints and can gain a much broader understanding of the topic than they would ever get from a textbook. Even better....it's free.

If there are other homeschoolers in your area, another option might be to see if the ones with older kids have any resources they would be willing to give you or to sell you for a low price. You can also get some good real-life feedback on those resources.

Try the Rainbow Resource catalog. It has the largest selection of homeschooling materials that I know of and at the best prices. I also get used books from Amazaon.com at a fraction of the price of new ones. eBay is another place that you can find good deals on occasion.

If you want free materials you might want to see if the K12 Online Public Schools is an option in your state. Just be aware that you will still be answering to the public school system.

I also know people that use nothing but the library.

Can I assume you are a mother of 3 living in Florida?!

You should check out the HSLDA website for homeschooling laws in your state.

Books can be obtained for free through your library. My children learned their history using good literature suggested in the Sonlight Curriculum catalog. Get a copy of Ruth Beechik's books (3R's and You Can HS Successfully). They are inexpensive and will take you through the 8th grade.

1.If you go through an online school-they will provide the textbooks but you will have them planning your schedule so you lose your flexibility.

2. Order your own Curriculum-Our favorite is Sonlight and they have a fabulous return policy if you don't like it.
