what golf clubs are needed for a starter set? What should I look for?

My husband is interested in learning to play golf. I'm thinking about getting him a used set of clubs for Christmas. What are the first clubs he should get to get started and what do I look for or avoid in used clubs? I know nothing about golf, so anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

thanks

Your best bet would actually be to get him some lessons. They have clubs available to use for the lessons and the pro can tell your husband what kind of clubs to get based on his swing. Golf Galaxy offers 4 lessons for $99.00 and they always have good deals on equipment.

You need a five iron, seven iron, nine iron, sand wedge and a putter.

For woods I would suggest that a three wood would be better than a driver and buy a five wood for the fairways. As an alternative why not call to see your local golf pro and buy a good second hand set of clubs and I am sure he would allow you to try them out before buying ( and give you a lesson).

best choice would be a complete sets something like a Wilson 1200 (if it still exists). Try to look for a stainless stell club head (not those cheap chrome like club head, they are terrible). Try to get steel shafts (regular flex should be the best, a beginner should never use stiff even if you think your husband is strong). also important a oversize, offset club head. putter on a decent set is not icluded, you might wanna go shopping for that later with him.
