Conic sections refers to the line where a plane intersects a cone, and for this purpose the cone is a double cone, in other words it extends in both directions from the vertex. If the cone is vertical and the plane is horizontal, the intersection is a circle. If you tilt the plane a bit you get an ellipse. If you tilt it more so that it intersects the other half of the cone you get a hyperbola. And if it intersects the vertex you get a pair of straight lines.

Imagine a cone shaped cake sitting on it's circular base. Slice through it at various angles The shapes of the slices illustrate the conic sections. For instance slice through it parallel to one sloping side the resulting slice is a parabola. Slice through it at an angle from right to left and the resulting shape is an oval. Slice through parallel to the bottom and the slice is a circle.
