Question for overweight christians...?

It is clearly stated in the bible that overindulging in food, among many things, is a sin. How do you justify your personal overindulgence? How do you justify ruining your body instead of making the most out of yourself?

Is it surprising that 80% of americans are christian and 80% of americans are overweight/obese? Is it surprising to anyone that in the foreseeable future virtually all americans will be obese?

I think that overweight people should feel bad about themselves and change their ways regardless of religious belief. But I definitely think that if not being overweight is a guideline of someone's religion, they should try at least a little bit to practice what they preach.

Update:

I really doubt that 250 million americans are suffering from a hormonal imbalance. Even if that were true, I still feel that should only account for an extra 10 pounds. These people should be extra careful about what they eat and be forced to exercise with cattle prods close behind, if that is the case. All the fat people I know don't seem to care or do anything about it. I see these people eating packaged junk food in front of the television for hours. Meals are prepared in the microwave from ingredients full of preservatives. None of them bother to exercise and can't even walk a mile without getting winded. I could understand accidental overindulgence for one meal when it is a special occasion or something, I do that all the time. To repeatedly overindulge every moment of every day seems completely absurd, especially when somebody has a belief that states this is the wrong way to live. Just try harder. Or at all.

Studies have shown a correlation between lack of education and unhealthy eating and lack of exercise .

Studies have also shown a strong correlation between lack of education and religious superstitions and delusions.

Ergo their is a correlation between being overweight and being christian dear.

    Good point !

It's true that Gluttony is a sin, but not all weight problems are caused by Gluttony! besides that there are many more reasons that people get over weight or obese, there are many illnesses that contribute directly to gaining too much weight, and then you also have many illnesses that contribute to much weight gain then also the medications for other illnesses can cause excessive weight gain, I think it's wrong to judge a person by their weight, religion, color or race.and if you believe that all Gluttons are overweight or that if you don't over eat you won't get fat, then you my dear are very naive, and uninformed, you need to educate yourself more, and do some research before and if you want to judge others, of whom you have no idea what their individual circumstances are, that cause their problem weight. Don't you know that the Bible also says Judge not lest you be judged in like manner! And your judgment is very unjust, to say the least , I have dealt with many overweight people and their reasons for being overweight are not all the same!

80% Americans....are possibly Christian, but they simply cannot follow

every single line in the bible. I think you might be trying to stereotype a religion instead of a culture. Remember, 80% are possibly Christians, but we are hardly fanatical enough about any of our religions to actually make it change our lifestyle.I believe that as Americans we are overweight. But this overweight culture is much more complicated than just a religion. It has to do with govt subsidies to farmers who excess food, which is then sold to poor families blah blah blah. You should do some more research on the subject. Oprah did a big special on it a few years back. It will open your eyes. Like I said it has a complicated cause, and a complicated cure.

80%? Think it's quite lower now. Seems much lower to me.

Anyway everythings a sin. Gluttony, yes. Pride, lying, murdering, adultery, vanity, idolotry, there's so many sins I don't know what they all are.

It's certainly not healthy to be overweight, but I think there are worse sins than that. Why don't we all get rid of our technology, computers, tv, and work hard labor 12-14 hours a day and churn our own butter and hand wash our own clothes and cook 2 hours to prepare a simple meal then we'll all be skinny.

    Back off.

You are making a lot of assumptions about being overweight. It is not simply because people stuff their face with food and are lazy. Only those who are too lazy to look up the facts for themselves would believe that.

There is so much more to the human body than a simple accounting equation. Hormones are finicky little things, the slightest thing can throw them out of balance. One of the biggest causes of weight gain in women is an hormonal imbalance called Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. Basically, it means your hormones have tipped toward being too masculine. There are a lot of issues involved with this and one of them is the tendency to gain weight and it being almost impossible to get it off again.

New research is also showing there are other things floating around in our blood stream which cause us to trigger hunger and stack on weight, instead of being able to keep it under control. Some people are actually designed to be large. Simple as that.

So, you want to have a go at christians, go ahead, but don't denigrate another section of society to do it. That's just pathetic.

    Source(s): hormonally caused obesity.

I rebuke the term Christian . But as a Man of God . i must say you went the wrong way with this Q . But it is ironic that the Christians have made this possible . it was the so called Christians that spearheaded the removal of the clean foods act . but70% of obesity is due to the so called good foods provided by the government that is 90% Christianic . then being denied the use of Hemp . that is made illegal by the Christianic cults . starting with the leader of it . The Roman Catholic Cult . but it is not just the christians that are suffering . and it is not just the fat ones . I am 120 lbs . and i require a better food than what we have . You go into the store and all the food is Fat free . Low clorestoral . I NEED THOSE THINGS it is the preservatives that does the most harm . along with the chemicles like herbacide and pestacides . it is not just the christians . we are all being poisoned . thanks to those that say they are Christians and are not .

I'm a christian I've smoked and have tattoos and in no way does it alter my relationship with God sure the smoking wasn't good for me but i'm not going to hell because of it, a cheese burger is bad for you but it's not a sin to eat one maybe if i ate like 7 of them it would be a different story, the whole you body is a temple gets taken out of context much like many many other parts of the bible many "religious" people bend the words of this good book to say what they want, so they can control others (particularly women) i guarentee all the smokers with a relationship with God will find themselves in heaven and all the "pure" highly religious folk will be quite surprised.

Feeling bad about ourselves doesn't help us at all. Sorry. We just have to work on getting transformed, resisting the devil and meditating on the word and everything that could help. The problem is that the weight comes right back on after losing it and not just the weight that was lost but more added. This is not just my problem but others say the same thing. I have a brother-in-law who loses about 150 lbs. or more and gains it back over and over. the last time he lost he managed to keep it off for a couple of years, but gained it back just when his wife (my sister) needed him the most and she has gone through terrible things with breast cancer and he now has to have a knee or hip operation.

I am very careful and have to get help with my housework. I don't have diabetes but have an intestinal disease, allergies and infections, and arthritis. Do the best I can with all the problems I have. God bless you.

Yes but at least you should also know if you confess your sins to God He is just to forgive your sins. Good to know what is your weakness and work on it did you look at yourself and can you say that you ask God to forgive you for your weakness. Judge others as you what to be judge. So feel sorry for these who are not as lucky as you some have disease, metabolic disorder, diabetes or thyroid problems, or on steroids due to lung disease can not help it it is part of there disease.

I think it's a vicious cycle all due to religion. You see, foods low in nutrient but high in protein and energy are not good for growing brains. Therefore, people are stupider which in turn makes them more likely to be religious.
